BIRMINGHAM, AL – Sophomore guard Erica Henderson had a season-high 14 points, but it was not enough to overcome UAB as Alabama State women's basketball team dropped a 65-58 contest to UAB Saturday afternoon at the Samford's Thanksgiving Classic, hosted.
Alabama State trailed by as many as 18 in the first half, but used a 9-0 run with 5:22 left to play in the first half. UAB continued to run its course as they ended the first half with a 14 point lead 33-19.
UAB would take a 21 point lead in the second half until the Lady Hornets went on a last minute rally with 1:08 left to cut it to six at 61-55. With 00:03 seconds left Henderson's three pointer closed the Ladies within in seven to end the game in a 65-58 loss to the Blazers. Alabama State falls to 1-4 on the year. UAB meanwhile, improves to 3-3.
Alabama State had a good day shooting free throws, connecting on 79.2 percent of its shots from the line (19-24). The Blazers meanwhile connected at a 42 percent clip from the field, ASU however outrebounded UAB (39-32), including 18 off the offensive glass that turned into 10 second-chance points. UAB also had their way in the lane, outscoring Alabama State in the paint 18-14.
Henderson was good on 5-of-13 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers to lead all players in scoring. Junior Jasmine Quinn joined Henderson in the double-digit scoring club with a season-best 12 points. Tanika Jackson paced the Lady Hornets with 14 boards.
The Lady Hornets scored its first two points off of free throws, finding themselves on the wrong side of a 12-4 score less than eight minutes into the contest. Following a 3-point shot by Taila Arrington, the Blazers jumped ahead to a 15-point lead at 22-7, but Alabama State would trim the advantage to nine thanks to a pair of baskets by Henderson and two free throws by Quinn to make it a 26-17 ballgame with 5:22 left to play in the first half.
The momentum would soon swing back to UAB, though, the Blazers banged back-to-back shots to spark a 5-0 run and take a commanding 31-17 advantage less than two minutes later. The Lady Hornets would finish the half 14 points down 33-19.
UAB continued its run at the start of the second half with a trey by Amber Jones as well as a jumper to make it a 19 point game, but the Lady Hornets would once again answer with a 10-0 run to cut the lead by ten at the 2:58 mark.
Amber Jones led UAB with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field, and Khalilah Watson was nest with 10. Meagan Brown led the Blazers with eight rebounds.
The Lady Hornets return to action on Wednesday when they take on the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa at 5 p.m. at Foster Auditorium.
