GAINESVILLE, Fla. --
The Alabama State women's basketball team will break for the holidays with a 3-7 record after pulling out a 61-55 win over the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders (0-10), Tuesday afternoon during the second round of the Gator Holiday Classic in Gainesville at the O'Connell Center. The Lady Hornets were led by Tanika Jackson with 32 points while Quentori Alford added seven points.
Alabama State led much of the first half down 30-29 going into halftime. There were three ties in the first half, but the Islanders took the lead with 14 seconds to play. The score was tied for a final time at the 1:16 mark 29-29 until an Islander free throw pulled them ahead by one. ASU shot 34 percent from the field, while the Islanders only shot 36 percent.
The Islanders came out on fire in the second half and went on a 5-0 run in the first four minutes to take a 34-29 lead. ASU built up its largest lead of seven points with 2:33 left, but TAMCC kept the pressure on and pulled to within four points with 12 seconds left. The Lady Hornets last couple of points were off of free throws as the Islanders were forced to foul down the stretch. Jackson had a strong second half with 22 points as the Lady Hornets garnished a 61-55 victory of TAMCC.
Jackson and Alford led the way in the rebounding department with 12 each.
After the holidays, the Lady Hornets will travel to Savannah State on Thursday, December 30th for a 5:30 p.m. Est. contest with the Lady Tigers.
