ASU Suffers 3-0 Setback at the Hands of Jackson State

Final Stats

Itta Bena, MS –
The Alabama State University Lady Hornets volleyball team fell in a hard-fought 3-0 loss to the Jackson State Tigers Saturday evening in the R.W. Harrison Arena.  Jackson took the match by the scores of 26-24, 25-17, 25-15.

In every game, the Lady Hornets and Tigers stayed within two points of each other until the game score reached twenty in games two and three.  Then, JSU would go on a run to put itself ahead.  Alabama State answered with a spurt of their own in games one and two, however a final push by Jackson sealed the match for the Lady Hornets.

Junior outside hitter Asia Manning led the ASU charge by recording 11 kills and adding four digs.  Sophomore libero Roselande Cornielle anchored the defense with ten digs.  Senior outside hitter Brena Wheeler recorded eight kills while freshman Sandrieka Wilkins hit a team-high .462 with seven kills on 13 attacks with one error and added one block assist.

Jackson out hit ASU .432 to .218 and out blocked the Lady Hornets 12 to 2.

"The effort we put out there tonight is indicative of what this group of young ladies bring to the floor every practice," head coach Sonia Price said. "I'm sorry we could not win tonight, but I'm glad we got to be a part a tough and close match against this team."

Manning and Ana Pego were voted to the MVSU Jessie Harris All-tournament team along with other members of tournament participants

Alabama State will return to the hardwood on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 to face Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Ala.  Set time is 6 p.m.
