MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Alabama State women's basketball team's attempt at ending their three game losing streak came up just short. The Lady Hornets could not get past Alcorn State losing 75-69.
ASU trailed the Lady Braves by 20 points with 14:36 left in the contest before they began to chip away at the lead. The last five minutes however they showed plenty of fight. They were able to cut the deficit all the way down to three with twenty seconds left before Alcorn State's Kiara Ruffin, who went 8-9 from the free throw line, made her final two free throws to up the their lead to 73-69. Brittany Howard turned ASU's ensuing possession over which ended the rally.
“The last five minutes of the game was probably the best we've played all season”. Head Coach Freda-Freeman-Jackson stated. “We still need to figure out how to defend better so we don't fall behind early in these games”. Coach Jackson said.
After being held below her season average last Saturday, Tanika Jackson responded with a double-double pouring in 28 points and grabbing 13 rebounds for ASU. Ruffin led all scorers for Alcorn. She finished with 29 points of her own. Tamara Waldington was the only other lady hornet to score in double figures. She chipped in 11 points.
Turnovers once again plagued the ASU women. They committed 24 of them and Alcorn scored 34 points as a result of those turnovers. “We can't afford to turn the ball over that much in this league”. Coach Jackson said. “This is an area that we will continue to work on”.
The loss dropped the lady hornets to 4-14 overall and 1-6 in the SWAC. Alcorn improved to 5-12 overall and 5-3 in the league. Coach Jackson's team prepares for a road trip to Texas as they'll face Texas Southern Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 pm.
