Lady Hornets Down UAPB 67-64 in Over Time Thriller

PINE BLUFF, Ark. – Tanika Jackson's 32 points and 12 rebounds lifts the Lady Hornets to its first conference 67-64 victory over the Arkansas Pine-Bluff University Lady Lions in overtime in the H.O. Clemmons Arena Saturday night.

The Lady Hornets had its best shooting performance of the young SWAC season, shooting 54.5 percent in the first half from the floor, including 40.0 percent from long range.  Tamara Waldington and Jasmine Quinn both notched 10 points to add to the victory.  Quinn had a season high of eight rebounds.

“I'm feeling great about this win tonight”, said Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  “Being on the road and getting a win is always a good feeling.  It gives the Ladies some moral and belief that they can win.” 

Freshman Amaria Brown also had a big night adding seven points and nine rebounds.  ASU's defense held the Lady Lions to just 27.6 percent shooting.  The Lady Hornets routinely turned its defense into offense scoring 11 points off of turnovers. 

In the first half ASU led by as many as 12 points 6-18 dominanting at the basket.  The turnovers were like the flu for both teams as either team couldn't shake it.  Alabama State ended the first half with a 28-16 lead.

Alabama State continued its run into the second half until the 13:03 mark when the Lady Lions pulled within four points of the Lady Hornets, 36-32.  The two teams knotted 57-57 with 23 seconds left on the clock going into overtime play.

A Lady Hornets went into an overtime surge leading the first two minutes by six points.  UAPB took advantage of missed buckets by ASU and shot free throws to put them within one point of the Lady Hornets 63-62.

With two seconds left on the clock Waldington shot free throws that clinched a 67-64 victory. 

Arkansas Pine Bluff was led by Chigoziany Okwumabua with 15 points.  Jasmine Abrams and Jenise Gentry both added 14 points apiece.

The Lady Hornets will return to the court on Monday night against Mississippi Valley Devilettes.  The game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in Greenville, Miss.
