The Alabama State University football team had its final walkthough Friday afternoon before the Hornets take on Prairie View A&M Saturday at 1 p.m.
The matchup of division leaders will be broadcast live on WVAS 90.7 FM and live on the internet on ESPN3.com free of charge. The game will also be televised on a tape-delayed basis on ESPNU Saturday night at 9:30 p.m.
Friday practices are usually focused but energetic as the team reviews assignments for Saturday's game. Today was no different, but with a heighten sense of excitement.
“We try to have a little bit of fun at times,” head coach
Reggie Barlow said of the different personnel groupings that usually accompany Friday practices. “We try to let the guys know we appreciate them. They have good energy and hopefully it will carry over into tomorrow. I think they are a focused group. They've worked hard all week. We want them to be loose today. The game will be on us quickly tomorrow. I love 1 o'clock games. We'll wake up, get going, and it will be time to play.”
Alabama State (5-1 overall, 5-0 SWAC) has won four consecutive games and leads the Eastern Division. Prairie View A&M (4-2, 4-1) has won three consecutive games.
“It will be important for us to play fast,” Barlow said of Saturday's keys to the game. “We have to protect our quarterback (
Greg Jenkins) from their defensive end (Adrian Hamilton), who we know is a really good player. Luckily their best defensive lineman will be on our best offensive lineman (
Terren Jones). Also, we have to continue to find a way to get turnovers. If we can do that, and capitalize on offense, we should be in pretty good shape.”
