ASU falls to UAPB

Montgomery, Ala. – The Alabama State soccer team fell short to the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff 3-0 on the road Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Hornets played well defensively early in the first period of the contest, until UAPB's Rachel Harker found the back of the net off an assist by Silvia Fuentes in the 34th minute to take the lead over ASU (1-0).

“We played great on defense in the first period I thought,” said head coach Jodie Smith. “We had three good opportunities to score, but couldn't find a way to do so.”

In the second period, The Lady Lions' Jade West scored off an assist from Fuentes in the 53rd minute of the match (2-0). With less than 30 minutes left in the contest, UAPB's Fuentes added a goal of her own off an assist from Taryn Wright to seal the deal for the Lions (3-0).

“Friday's match against Alabama A&M is going to be a real tight contest,” said Coach Smith. “This game will be like a one game playoff match to see who will be the last team to represent the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division respectively in the tournament next month and the atmosphere will show.”

With the loss, State falls to 1-15-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.

The Lady Hornets are set to travel to Huntsville, Ala. to face conference foe the Lady Bulldogs in a showdown. This clash is slated for 3 p.m. Friday, October 21.
