Alabama State Wins Final Match Over NCCU In UMES Tournament

In the final match for the Lady Hornets in the University of Eastern Shore Maryland Tournament, Alabama State rolled past North Carolina Central State in three games, 25-9, 25-20 and 25-19.

Alabama State went on an 11-0 run early in the set to lead 13-2.  The run was highlighted by Maya Bell and Luiza Griz, who combined for six service aces.  NCCU went on a on 5-0 run to close the lead to seven.  It still wasn't enough as the Lady Hornets cruised to a 25-9 win.

The second set saw three ties, with the Lady Hornets keeping the lead.  With final tie coming at 13-13, the Lady Hornets went on a 3-0 run to take the lead for good.  Freshman Erika Thompson sparked a key run that pushed ASU's lead to 21-17 before taking the match 25-20.

Set three allowed the Lady Hornets to have every player gain some experience as every player on the team saw court time.  Alabama State finished the set 25-19 to gain the 3-0 victory over NCCU.

In her second match of the day Maya Bell led the Lady Hornets with 13 kills, one service ace, and 4 digs.  For Bell's performance during the tournament she was nominated to the UMES All-Tournament Team.  Seniors Tiffany Dilliard, Asia Manning and junior Roselande Corneille each picked up six kills apiece.  Thompson managed seven kills, two service aces and six digs.

Alabama State will return to action on Oct. 4, as they take the road to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to play Stillman University at 6 p.m.
