Lady Hornets Travel to Baton Rouge for SU Tournament

The Alabama State volleyball team will travel to Baton Rouge, La. for its final regular season tournament of the season, the Southern University Invitational Sept. 7-8.  The Lady Hornets will face Texas Southern and Prairie View of the west division in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

“I am excited about seeing other teams from the west division,” stated ASU's Head Volleyball Coach Penny Lucas-White.  “This is also a homecoming for me I grew in Baton Rouge so I will get a lot of support from friends and family as well.  This will also be the first time that I have faced Texas Southern.   I have gotten a chance to compete against Prairie View while coaching at my previous school.  I know how Coach Peete recruits as well as how her offense works.”

Alabama State (9-16, 2-0 SWAC) will meet the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern (1-13, 0-3 SWAC) on Friday, October 7, at noon and later ASU and PV (3-13, 3-0 SWAC) will take the court that evening at 6 p.m.  The last time that the Lady Panthers and ASU met was during the SWAC Volleyball Tournament and the Lady Hornets faced them twice falling in both matches.

Lady Hornet's freshman Maya Bell continues to lead ASU with 385 kills, while junior Roselande Corneille has contributed 187 for Alabama State.  Two other newcomers to the team Alex Chace and Erika Thompson lead ASU in the block category with 26 apiece.  In over 25 matches the ladies have posted a team high of 145 service aces, led by Bell's 45.  Libero Luiza Griz has a team-high 231 defensive saves, while setter Ana Pego has tallied 734 assists.
