The Alabama State volleyball team fell to state rival Alabama A&M in a pivotal Southwestern Athletic matchup (25-22, 26-28, 19-25 and 26-28). The Lady Hornets was downed by the Bulldogs, 3-1 on Thursday night in Huntsville. With the loss, Alabama State falls to 13-20 on the season and 4-4 in conference action, while Alabama A&M improves to 13-17 and 6-2 in SWAC play.
“This was an awesome match for us,” said Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White. “We played hard and we played with fewer attack errors then we have all season. I am really proud of these ladies they played hard and never gave up.”
Freshman
Maya Bell led the attack with 31 kills, while
Roselande Corneille registered her seventh double-double of the season, notching 15 kills and 13 digs. The Copperas Cove, Texas native Alex Chace led the team with a .350 hitting percentage (9-2-20).
Senior
Ana Pego handed out 51 assists and sophomore
Luiza Griz led the defensive efforts with a team-high 23 digs.
The Lady Hornets will return to the court next weekend during the 2011 SWAC Volleyball Tournament to be held in Westwego, La. The Tournament is set to begin on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 9:00 am at the John A. Alario, Sr. Events Center. The Championship will take place on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3:00 p.m. and will be broadcasted on ESPNU (tape delayed).
