Box Score In the season opener of the 2011-12 Alabama State women's basketball team, the Lady Hornets fell to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 97-37.
“Our girls had the right attitude tonight, played extremely hard and never stopped playing,” Head Women's Basketball Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson stated. “Georgia Tech was bigger and faster than we were, and with us having some of our bigs out, I think if they were able to play, it would have made a world of difference in how we played.”
Freeman-Jackson started two freshmen who led the team in scoring.
Danielle Gazaway scored a game-high 15 points and had two steals, while
Kierra Paige scored seven points and had five rebounds. Freshman
Ashley Jones, who came off the bench, added four points and seven rebounds.
“I think my freshman learned a lot tonight in their collegiate debuts," Freeman-Jackson said. "They got a chance to play against a fast paced, tough team that bumped a lot on the inside. The girls saw how they are going to need to play in this league or any other league. We are going to have to get stronger and take the bumps with the bruises as they come."
Georgia Tech had four players in double figures, as both Dawn Maye and Sydney Wallace each scored 13 points. Metra Walthour scored 11, and Jasmine Blain added 10.
ASU will return home to face Samford in the home opener on Wednesday November 16, at 6 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
