Freshman guard
Danielle Gazaway scored 15 points to lead the Alabama State University women's basketball team past Nicholls State 61-57 on Monday afternoon in Thibodaux, La. The contest was the first Lady Hornets regular season win.
“I feel great about getting a win on the road as well as getting the first win of the season,” Head Women's Basketball Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. “Any time you can get a win on the road it's always a great feeling. The girls worked hard today and did a great job of running the game offensively and defensively. We were down by seven at the half and the young ladies stepped up and did what they needed to do to get the win.”
Freshmen
Durriya Shields and
Kierra Paige scored eight points apiece in the victory for Alabama State. Shields also had three assists and one steal in the game, while Paige had one assist and one steal.
“I was extremely pleased with all my freshmen players today,” stated Freeman-Jackson. “They did a great job for us and this shows me that they are growing up fast and buying into our system doing what they need to do to get the win. I am especially impressed with Shields because she stepped in for senior
Tamara Wadlington, who was struggling a little today and ran the offense for us. She also played well on the other end of the court.
Senior
Millicent Jones scored five points and hauled in a game-high eight rebounds for the Lady Hornets while sophomore
Brittney Howard in her first game back on the court scored seven points and pulled down six of Alabama State's 34 rebounds.
“It was huge for us to have Howard back in the rotation she played 25 minutes,” Freeman-Jackson stated. “She's a smart player and she completes us as a team. I was really impressed that she came in and played Nicholls the way that she did since she sat out most of pre-season and our first two games.”
ASU shot 50 percent in the second half of the game, and held Nicholls to only 30 percent from the field. They outscored the Colonels by 11 points.
The Lady Hornets are back in action on Tuesday, November 29 as ASU takes on in-state school University of Mobile. The game time is set for 6 p.m. in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The fans can follow the action through bamastatesports.com via live stats.
