The Lady Hornets volleyball team will head to the state of Mississippi Friday for a conference match. Alabama State (13-18, 4-2 SWAC) will take on Jackson State (22-9, 5-0) on Friday night. The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
Alabama State is currently on a two game win streak, both of those wins coming from Alcorn State. The Lady Hornets defeated Alcorn in three Tuesday night during senior night.
“The girls played well against Alcorn,” Penny Lucas-White stated. “We are looking forward to this match on Friday, because Jackson is the strongest team in the SWAC right now. We need to be detailed, focused and believe that anything can happen.”
Freshman Maya Bell continues to raise the bar as she leads ASU in aces and kills. Bell leads the offense with 489 kills and 51 service aces. She is currently ranked first in the Southwestern Athletic Conference in kills and third in the conference in aces. Bell is the only player in the SWAC averaging more than 4.6 kills per set.
The Jackson State Tigers swept Southern University on Wednesday, 3-0, which extended their winning streak to 18 straight. Christine Edwards and Chyna Coleman have combined for 750 kills as the Tigers top two offensive weapons. Jackson State is limiting their opponents to just 9.77 kills per set with a meager .143 hitting percentage. The Tigers have also recorded better statistics in blocks and digs than their opposition.
Alabama State currently owns a 17-11 overall series over the Tigers. The last match went to Jackson State, 3-0 in Montgomery at Lockhart Gymnasium.
