ASU Drops Nailbiter To Troy

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Alabama State Women's basketball team fell late to Troy 60-53 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Thursday night.

In the second half, Brooke Bowie ignited a 14-2 run for the Lady Trojans at the 9:55 mark which would eventually make the score 47-39. Alabama State (2-4) would attempt to make a run of their own, but it wasn't enough to overcome an eight point deficit by Troy (1-8).

“Well it was a game that I felt we had a great game plan for,” ASU head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said. “We had too many missed assignments. Our guards would go in to help when their girls would penetrate leaving the shooters wide open. I thought one of the biggest things that hurt us coming out at the half, the score was tied, we gave up two unanswered baskets giving them the momentum on our court, but I feel we just have to learn from these things.”

For the half, the game was tied to say the least at 22-all. ASU hit 9 of 30 shooting 30 percent from the field, while the Lady Trojans hit 8 of 24 shooting 33.3 percent. The Lady Hornets was anchored by senior forward Milicent Jones with 15 shooting 6 of 12 from the field while grabbing nine rebounds.

DeAngela Sword led the way for the Lady Trojans with 21 points, shooting 8 of 19 from the field. Ieva Nagy downed 12 points off 4 of 7 shooting while Jasmine Pitts added 10 points off the bench.

Sophomore Quentori Alford added seven points and hauled in 10 rebounds for the Lady Hornets.

Alabama State shot 32.8 percent from the field for the game and 35.7 percent in the second half.  Troy shot 42.9 for the second half and 38.5 percent for the game.

The Lady Hornets will next see action December 17 at 6 p.m. when they host the Alabama Crimson Tide at the Dunn- Oliver Acadome.

“Alabama, they play small and are extremely athletic,” said Coach Freeman-Jackson.” They have some great guards, great shooters, and that can get to the basket. We'll have to find some plays to off-set their motion offense and figure out a way to come away with a victory on Saturday.”
