Missed Opportunities Hurts ASU Women's Basketball in 64-54 Loss to Alabama

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Alabama State Women's basketball team could not overcome a late 10 point deficit as they fell to the Crimson Tide of Alabama 64-54.

“It's a game that I thought we should have pulled out,” said ASU head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. “We made too many poor decisions, had too many bad plays, were not executing the ball when we needed to, and could not connect from the free throw line. As far as the free throw line, these two nights we haven't been doing well, we've had to address this issue to many times. I thought my girls played hard but we just made some bad decisions at times.”

ASU led for the most part of the first half until the Crimson Tide went on a 8-3 run to tie the game up 21–all at  the 5:53 margin. Erica Russell ignited the run hitting a pair of free throws. Shafontaye Myers and Jasmine Robinson added 10 points each in the effort.

“The biggest thing that killed us was, we didn't block out tonight,” said Coach Freeman-Jackson. “They got 18 offensive rebounds and scored off most of them. Going up against a tough SEC team, a very athletic team, we can't give up that many opportunities to score and we overworked ourselves.”

Erica Henderson scorched a pair of three pointers to led Alabama State with 10 points shooting 3 of 9 from the field. The Lady Hornets were hindered in the first half by a poor display of shooting from the line, going 6 of 15.

Alabama State made it interesting coming out the half scoring eight unanswered points to take back the lead 36-34. Quentori Alford added eight points and led the team with seven rebounds.

The Lady Hornets are set to host the Savannah State Tigers at 4 p.m. Monday, December 19 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

“They (Savannah State) are a well-discipline team.” Coach Freeman-Jackson said. “They are very athletic, and are accustomed to playing us. He (Coach Baker) has great personnel, we just have to make sure we handle what we need to on our end and expect to win.”
