Garland, Tx.—The Alabama State women's basketball team lost Wednesday night in the first round of the Farmers Insurance SWAC Tournament to top-seeded Southern 58-39 at the Special Events Center in Garland, Texas.
Despite committing 17 first half turnovers, eighth-seeded ASU trailed by only six points at the break. The Lady Hornets out shot the Lady Jaguars from the field, making 40 percent of its attempts compared to Southern's 34 percent.
With Alabama State down by six points at 33-27 with under 15 minutes left in the game,
Southern University's Laneisha Stephens made a jumper, followed by layups by Adrian Sanders and Aerica Hicks to extend the lead to 39-27. The Lady Hornets would not get any closer the rest of the way.
“I am really proud for the way our girls fought through adversity all season long,” Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson stated. “We battled injuries before the season even started and we were still able to come away with must win games just to get into the tournament.”
ASU lost starting point guard Ja'Kayla Hill with an injury prior to the start of the season. As the season progressed, two more players were lost for the remainder of play due to injury in Yahindra Edwards and Erica Henderson.
The Lady Hornets finished the game without any scorers in double figures. Tanika Jackson led ASU with nine points and five rebounds. Millicent Jones scored eight points and Tamara Wadlington chipped in six points and eight boards.
Southern was led by Ashley Augerson's 12 points. Freda Allen and Jamie Floyd scored 10 points each.
Alabama State ends the season at 8-22 overall.
