A Look Back: Lady Hornets Volleyball

(Note: This is one of a series of stories looking back on the best games/performances/contests of the 2010-11 Alabama State Athletic Season.)

The Alabama State University volleyball team won its first conference game with a 3-1 decision over the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes on September 26.  The Lady Hornets took the match by the scores of 25-22, 25-20, 20-25 and 25-20.  Alabama State had not won a match over the Devilettes in several years.

Senior Brena Wheeler and junior Asia Manning led the Lady Hornets charge with 14 kills apiece.   Wheeler also recorded her first double-double of the season with 17 digs.   Freshman Sandrieka Wilkins recorded a career high 10 kills,  and junior Ana Pego tallied 48 assists, eight digs and three block assists.  Senior middle hitter Althea Russell also added nine kills, two service aces, six digs and five blocks to the victory.

ASU trailed by as many as two points in the first half of set one, knotting the game at 18-18. From there they went on to take the lead off of MVSU mistakes to win the set.

ASU opened the game by taking a 2-0 lead before MVSU came back to tie the contest.  The match would be tied six times before ASU pushed ahead on a kill by Pego.  MVSU went on to score six more points before the Lady Hornets finished them off with the score of 25-20 taking a 2-0 advantage over the Devilettes.

After dropping the third game, the Lady Hornets started fast in the clinching game with combined powerful hitting from Manning, Russell, Wilkins and senior Jessica Lindsey.  ASU jumped out to a 7-1 run before holding on for the win.
