The Alabama State University volleyball team opened its 2011 season dropping an 3-0 decision to the University of Alabama (25-12, 25-15, 25-15)  and falling 3-1  to Texas State (25-13, 25-13, 21-25, 25-23) during the Hampton Inn Bama Bash Friday at Foster Auditorium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Lady Hornets were led by freshman Maya Bell recorded 25 kills and had five service Aces, while Roselande Cornielle led the team in digs with 19.  Anna Pego led the team with 43 assists.

“I was really proud of the young ladies today,” said head coach Penny Lucas-White.  “In the match against Alabama, I felt as though we were a little nervous at first and then once we got our groove going, we started picking up the rhythm.  The match against Texas State gave me an even greater feeling because we started jelling and understanding what each other needs were-us as coaches and them as players.”

Alabama State will face Austin Peay Saturday at 10 a.m. on the second day of the Hampton Inn Bama Bash.
