The Alabama State volleyball team travels to South Carolina this weekend to participate in the South Carolina Spike Fest Tournament on September 2-3 in Orangeburg, S.C. The Lady Hornets will take on The Citadel, Claflin, Wofford and host team South Carolina State. The first serve is set for 11 a.m. on Friday against The Citadel.
After a hard fought match-up against Troy this past Tuesday evening falling 3-0, ASU will look to overcome their young shortcomings.
“This weekend will be a team builder for us,” said senior Asia Manning. “This will give the team a chance to come together and put the puzzle pieces where they need to go.”
Alabama State comes into this match 0-4 overall, while The Citadel enters the match with a perfect 2-0 record. This will only be the second occasion that these two teams have met. During the 2009 season ASU was defeated by the Bulldogs, 3-0.
“This trip means a lot for us as a team”, said junior libero Roselande Cornielle. “This is a long trip and we will be able to bond together on the road as well as on the floor. This will also let us put every component that we are missing together and become one.”
The Lady Hornets will face Claflin in a 3 p.m. meeting on Friday. This will mark the second matchup between these two programs. Claflin currently holds the lead 1-0. Southern Division champions of the MEAC, South Carolina State enters this weekend 0-3, and ASU is set to play the first match of the day Saturday at 9:00 a.m. against them. SCSU currently holds the lead over ASU 9-7.
“I am excited about this tournament, commented senior Ana Pego. “I expect us to play as a team, we've played against some tough teams this past week, and I feel if we continue to play hard we will continue to gel. We need to be discipline in every game that we play.”
ASU will round out the weekend against Wofford College, who enters the match 4-1. This will be the first meeting for the two teams. The match is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday.
