Hornets Top Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. - LB Leland Baker's interception with nine seconds remaining sealed Alabama State's 21-14 win at Jackson State Saturday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Baker's interception at the Alabama State 28-yard line was the seventh takeaway by the Hornets (3-1 overall, 3-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference), who have won six consecutive SWAC games dating back to last season.

“We're excited,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “We told our guys it was going to be a championship-type game against a really good team on the road. We came in and played hard and I'm proud of them.”

Jackson State (3-1, 1-1) was limited to only 14 points, 21 below its season average.

“Our defense played hard and they took it as a personal challenge to come out and play against these guys,” Barlow said. “They did a good job. Jackson State had turned the ball over 12 times prior to tonight. We felt that's who they were and that they would be a team that would turn it over and we were able to get seven takeaways.”

CB Saeed Lee's 20-yard interception return for touchdown broke a 7-all third-quarter tie and gave ASU a 14-7 lead with 8:39 to play in the third quarter.

FS Kejuan Riley's second interception of the game led to another Hornets' third quarter score. A 10-play, 56-yard drive ended with Quendarius McKibben's four-yard touchdown run to give Alabama State a 21-7 lead with 3:31 to play in the period.

Jackson State cut its deficit to seven on Casey Therriault's 25-yard touchdown pass to Marcellous Wilder with 10:39 remaining in the fourth quarter.

QB Greg Jenkins completed 15 of 26 passes for 147 yards. WR Nick Andrews caught seven passes for 79 yards and became just one of five players in Alabama State history with more than 2,000 receiving yards.

Riley made a career-high 12 tackles and now has five interceptions this season and 13 for his career, tied for the most in ASU history since 1970 with Lecourey Harvest (1990-93) and Michael Madison (1975-78).
