The Alabama State Lady Hornets volleyball team posted a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-15) win over Miss. Valley State Sunday at Lockhart Gym. With the decision, ASU improves to 7-12 overall and 2-0 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) while MVSU falls to 6-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
“I am very pleased and excited about this win today,” said ASU's head coach Penny Lucas-White. “Although we only had six players today I was very happy with our performance. I was proud of how the girls played hard throughout the whole match. We pulled together and became the stronger of the two teams and won.”
Freshman outside hitter Maya Bell added a team-best 14 kills while junior outside hitter Roselande Corneille and sophomore Luiza Griz tallied 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Senior setter Ana Pego led the squad with 38 assists and six digs. Freshman middle hitter Alexandra Chace led the team with four blocks (3 solo). Freshman Erica Thompson aided the Ladies with six kills, four digs and one big solo block.
As a team, Alabama State registered a .390 hitting percentage compared to MVSU, which posted a .207 attack mark.
In sets one and three the Lady Hornets posted over a .400 attack percentage, .481 in set one and .455 in set three.
ASU will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 30 when they travel to Princess Anne, MD to participate in the Maryland Eastern Shore University Tournament. The first set will start at 1 p.m. as they will face Cal State Bakersfield.
