In the final day of the South Carolina State volleyball tournament, Alabama State fell to both South Carolina State (17-25, 23-25,23-25) and Wofford (22-25, 20-25,23-25), 3-0 on Saturday morning.
A pair of Lady Hornets posted double figure kills in both games. May Bell tallied 26 kills, while Asia Manning totaled 24 respectively.
Set one of the first morning match saw Alabama State get off to a slow start against South Carolina State. Alabama State kept the score tight, but the Bulldogs did not let up taking a six point lead (15-9) enroute to the win.
In set two Alabama State both teams went back and forth tying the set four times at 9-9. ASU eventually took a two point advantage over the Bulldogs 18-16. This would be the last time the Lady Hornets saw the lead, before South Carolina State went on to take set two.
Set three saw much of a similar battle, ASU came out of the break fighting and took an 8-4 lead. South Carolina pulled ahead 13-10 off of some ASU mistakes. After a Lady Hornet timeout, ASU scored six points to advance over the Bulldogs 16-14. SCSU went on it's on 5-0 run, however ASU stayed close but it wasn't enough as South Carolina closed the match.
In match two against Woffod, Alabama State jumped out to an early 8-3 lead, but could not maintain the advantage.
Alabama State again came out strong in set two, taking another early lead, but they were unable to hold off Wofford, which took a 20-15 advantage that they never relinquished. Wofford went on to take the third and final set by a score 25-23.
The Lady Hornets will play their home opener Wednesday, Sept. 7 in Lockhart Gym against Stillman College at 6:00 p.m.
