On the first day of the Friday sessions of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore tournament at UMES, ASU came out on the short end, falling to Cal State Bakersfield 3-1 and host Hawks 3-0. Cal State handled the Lady Hornets by the scores of 25-23, 25-17, 21-25, 25-22, while UMES defeated Alabama State with the scores of 25-19, 25-13, and 25-12.
With the losses, Alabama State is now 7-15 on the season, while Maya Bell still managed to tally 31 kills, 14 digs and two blocks on the day. Another Lady Hornet that was in double digits was Roselande Corneille, which totaled 11 kills, nine assists and 13 digs.
ASU fought hard in match one against Cal State as they were able to capture set two in the match, which they hit for a .235 percentage. The Lady Hornets saw set four within reach, but just couldn't hang on to get the win.
When facing the Hawks Alabama State found themselves in a hole that they never could get out falling to UMES 3-0.
The Lady Hornets will return to play on Saturday facing Hampton University at 10 a.m. in the second round of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Tournament.
