Alabama State Women's Basketball Set To Host Intra-State Rival Alabama A&M

The long awaited first game of a two part series of the bout with the Lady Hornets and the Bulldogs basketball game is set for Saturday, January 14, at 3 p.m.will be in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The Lady Hornets look forward to this match-up as well as the fans at both Universities.

“We don't want to get too excited about this game,” Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson stated. “But you almost can't help it.  It's a big game and we have a lot of young players.   It's not only a rival game but it's a SWAC game and we want to continue playing well and do what we need to do to stay on top.  We are going to stay within our norm and I don't want to put too much pressure on the girls.  We are going to try to keep the girls focused and on point.”

“Alabama A&M is a well disciplined team most of their scoring comes from Whiquitta Tobar, who is leading A&M in every category.  She is averaging 20 points a game. We are going to play her like we play any other leading scorer on teams.  If we do what we are supposed to do the outcome should be to our advantage.”

Alabama State currently owns a 19-16 series lead over the Bulldogs.  Under veteran head coach Freeman-Jackson the Lady Hornets are holding a 16-10 advantage over A&M.  Last season the Bulldogs defeated the Lady Hornets in the two game series.  The last time was on Feb. 12, 2011 with the Lady Hornets falling 60-47.

ASU enters the game with an overall record of 6-7 and a 3-1 SWAC record.  The Lady Hornets are on a three game win streak having wins over Jackson State, Mississippi Valley State and last week's 66-58 game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Freshmen guards Danielle Gazaway and Kierra Paige continue to lead the Lady Hornets in scoring, with eight points apiece.  Quentori Alford is leading ASU in rebounding averaging 7.4 rebounds per game.

Alabama A&M enters the game with a 7-7 overall record and has a 2-2 conference mark.  The team is led in scoring by Tobar, who is averaging 20.1 points per game.
