Poor Shooting Late Hinders ASU Women's Basketball in Loss

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Alabama State women's basketball team fell to intra-state rival Alabama A&M, 65-56, at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday afternoon.

Tied at 55-all with less than three minutes to play, the Lady Hornets were outscored 10-1 down the stretch.

“We didn't do a good job containing (Whiquitta) Tobar,” Alabama State head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said. “We knew coming into the game she would a tough match-up for us and she got her average. She's averaging 20 points per game, and she got 22 (six in the final 2:30 of the game). Shundray Davis (11 points) caused us problems as well because she was able to stop on a dime and hit the mid-range jumper.”

The game featured 10 ties and 11 lead changes as Alabama State (4-8 overall, 3-2 in SWAC) took its last lead at 49-48 with 6:16 to play on a pair of free throws by Tamara Wadlington. After twice falling behind by four points, the Lady Hornets rallied to tie the game for the final time on two free throws by Jasmine Quinn and a jumper by Quentori Alford with 2:38 to play. However, ASU only made one free throw the remainder of the game.

The Bulldogs (8-7, 3-2) took advantage of the Lady Hornets' foul trouble, making 11 of its 16 second-half free throws. The Lady Hornets were outrebound by the Bulldogs 45 to 33, with 19 of the rebounds coming off the offensive end.

“One of the biggest things for us was we didn't rebound,” Freeman-Jackson said. “We allowed them too many second chance opportunities, so we have to do a better job of putting a body on the players and only allowing teams one opportunity to shoot. Every time we give up too many rebounds, this usually is the end result, so we have to do a better job rebounding the ball.”

Kierra Paige led the Alabama State with 14 points, including three 3-pointers, Danielle Gazaway scored 13 and Alford 12 and a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lady Hornets will return to the hardwood next Saturday when they travel to Lorman, Miss. to take on the Braves of Alcorn State at 5:30 p.m.
