Women's Basketball To Host Texas Southern

The Alabama State women's basketball team started their day off at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, here in Montgomery, before going to practice this evening.  It was College Connection Day at the Church and Alabama State represented the University in their ASU gear.

The Lady Hornets are set to host the Texas Southern Lady Tigers on Monday.   The game is slated for 5:00 pm in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

This game represents the halfway-point for Alabama State, with eight games prior to the contest, and nine regular season games remaining before the SWAC Tournament on March 7.

“This is another big game for us,” stated Head Coach Freda Freeman Jackson.  “This marks the halfway-point of the conference season.  This also means that in order to be in a good spot (hopefully the in the top five), that we won't have to play on the first day of the SWAC Tournament.  Hopefully after Saturday's game the girls can see that we can win and that we just need to keep playing the way that we did.  The girls are continuing to work hard and they finally have our system in place.”

Alabama State currently holds a 35-19 all time mark against Texas Southern.  Last season, the Lady Hornets had one of its better offensive outputs of the season against TSU in a 61-41 win in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The Lady Hornets are coming off of a 67-53 win over Prairie View in what could have been a tight game throughout the evening, but the Lady Hornets kept their pace got the victory.  Four Alabama State players scored in double figures, junior Erica Henderson tied her best game of her career of 18 points to lead the Lady Hornets, while freshman forward Ashley Jones saw her career best game high of 14 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman Danielle Gazaway scored 11 points, while sophomore Quentori Alford chipped in 10 points and 13 rebounds making this her second game with double-double figures this season.

“I really feel like we are playing the way we need to,” said Coach Freeman-Jackson. “We are ready for this match-up against TSU.  We practiced hard today and we see that we are going to have to keep on keeping on, which is playing defense and getting results every time we shoot and rebound defensively as well as offensively if we want to win.”
