Late Run Pushes ASU Past Jackson State

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - Kierra Paige's 16 points led the Alabama State women's basketball team to a 52-49 SWAC win over Jackson State Thursday night.

“This was a huge win for us,” Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said.  “Hopefully our girls will realize the importance of winning on the road.   This should now get their confidence going and get ready for Mississippi Valley for Saturday night's game.  Anytime that you are able to split on the road that's really good it's really tough when you play on the road.  I thought that it was a good win, our girls fought back when we were down by six points at the half.   We were able to get ourselves back in the ball game and we did enough to get it done.”

Alabama State dominated on the boards out-rebounding the Lady Tigers 46-33.  Sophomore Brittney Howard had 12 of these boards leading all players in rebounds.  Quentori Alford pulled down nine rebounds of her own and scored eight points to the win.

“We struggled from time to time on the defensive end of the ball, but we were able to get some stops when we needed to.  Quentori Alford made the difference in the game in the second half.  She was able to contain Tiffany Kellum and get the stops when we needed to.  “Q” was also able to give us some inside scoring on the other end and she was also gave us some “and one's”, so that meant the Jackson State had to work hard on the other end.”

With less than five minutes of the game left it became a nail biter for the Lady Hornets trailing by two.  At the 4:31 mark ASU tied the game 44-44 before they went on a shooting spree.  With time ticking off the clock ASU took a final run to end the game 52-49.

Alabama State will return to the court as they face Miss. Valley on January 7.  Tip-off time is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
