Alabama State Set For SWAC Showdown

The Alabama State Hornets had their final practice Friday afternoon prior to Saturday's key Southwestern Athletic Conference showdown with the Jackson State Tigers.

Kickoff between the Hornets (4-2, 4-1) and Tigers (2-4, 2-2) is at 1 p.m. at Cramton Bowl. The game will be broadcast live on WVAS 90.7 FM and video streamed live free of charge on bamastatesports.com. It's the Breast Cancer Awareness Game, as fans are asked to wear pink with their ASU gear.  Fans are also asked to bring their old cell phones to be collected in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Week.

The game is part of the Think Pink Weekend. Following Saturday's football game, the Lady Hornet volleyball team will face Cal State-Bakersfield at 7 p.m. at Lockhart Gym. The weekend culminates on Sunday with the volleyball team again facing Cal State-Bakersfield at 1 p.m. and soccer facing Grambling also at 1 p.m.

“Once you get to Friday's practice, it seems like it took a long time to get here,” head coach Reggie Barlow said. “It's another exciting opportunity to play against a SWAC opponent in the East. Our guys worked hard this week, and hopefully we'll all be on the same page and ready to play well tomorrow.”

In the quest for a championship, there are games like this, where two teams are in the hunt for one goal. With each team already looking up to division leader Alabama A&M, Saturday's game is critical in the title chase.

“It's almost like a playoff atmosphere and mindset,” Barlow said. “It's going to be physical game from the beginning to the end. They want it bad, and we want it bad in this opportunity to stay in the race and ultimately represent the East in the SWAC Championship."
