Soccer Defeats Grambling

Box Score The Alabama State soccer team defeated the Grambling State Tigers 4-0 Sunday afternoon at the ASU Soccer Complex.

“It's a plus to get back on the winning side,” head coach Jodie Smith. “We came out and did some nice things but weren't patient enough on the offensive end. It's hard to say that when we scored four goals and had a shutout, but we could have played much better both offensively and defensively.

Despite a slow start, sophomore forward Alexandria Cannon scored the first goal of the match for ASU in the 31st minute off an assist from freshman forward Anastasia McCleary. Senior forward Lenna Lamas assisted junior defender Stephanie Howard in the 38th minute to add the second score of the contest.

Cannon scored the third goal for the Lady Hornets in the 41st minute, assisted by junior defender Helma Von Zadow.

Lamas capped the scoring for ASU in the 71st minute off an assist from freshman midfielder Kaedi Walther.

Alabama State (5-6-2) outshot the Lady Tigers 27-4. Sophomore goalkeeper Kylee Hathaway had three saves in the match.

The Lady Hornets will travel to face Jackson State Friday, October 19 at the JSU Soccer Complex. The match is slated 4 p.m.

“Different experience for us now,” said Smith. “We have a fairly young team and now we're going on the road to face last year's division champions Jackson State, so we'll have to deal with a little adversity, but we'll prepare and continue to work hard practicing throughout the week.”
