LORMAN, Miss.—Alabama State defeated Alcorn State 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-19) in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) volleyball game held in Lorman, Miss.
Amber Bennett led the Lady Hornets with 13 kills and
Chelsey Scott added seven as ASU moved to 6-22 on the year and evened their record at 2-2 in SWAC action.
“It was good to pick up a win, and it was even bigger to get a conference win, but we still have a lot of work to do,” Head Coach
Penny Lucas-White said. “We continue to work on some new offensive sets and as always when you do that, sometimes it looks great and other times it does not look very good.”
ASU jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first set and went up 10-2 in the second set on their way to the 2-0 lead.
The third set saw Alcorn (1-22/0-6 SWAC) hold their first lead of the night at 1-0, and it turned out to be their only lead. With the set even at three, the Lady Hornets went on to build a 13-5 lead and it looked as though ASU was going to win the set with another big score.
Alcorn had other plans as they outscored ASU 11-3 to even the game at 16. From there ASU went on a 5-0 run to push the lead out to 21-16 on their way to the 25-19 win.
ASU hit .247 for the game and
Brooke Beasley had a game-high 28 assists. The Lady Hornets defense held Alcorn to a
-.145 hitting percentage for the game.
“We have to continue to work hard as we are going to need to play a lot better against Mississippi Valley tomorrow night,” Lucas-White said. “We really want to get on a roll during these last few conference games and be playing our best volleyball of the season heading into the SWAC Tournament, but that is a couple of weeks away.”
The Lady Hornets will end the regular season road portion of the schedule when they play at Mississippi Valley State tomorrow (Friday) at 6 p.m.
