ASU Women's Basketball To Host Nicholls State

For the first time the Lady Hornets Basketball team will host Nicholls State at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

With the return of Quentori Alford on the court, Alabama State will look to pick up another win on the season.  Alford paced 19 points and eight boards during the 90-88 loss to Troy earlier in the week.  She was followed by teammates Danielle Gazaway with 14, Nakiya Smith had 12 and Kierra Paige added 10 in the loss.

“We have been trying to regroup from loss against Troy,” said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  “We have been working on our half court defense and making sure that we get back on defense when we need to.  We know that we can get points, but we need to make sure that we run our offense as well.  I'm really glad to see “Q” back in the line-up she does a lot for us as far as leadership on the court and playing defense.”

This will be the third time that these two teams will meet up in action.  The Lady Hornets lead the series 2-0.  The last time these two teams met on the court ASU paced a 61-57 win over the Colonels.  The first time Alabama State faced Nicholls State was during the 1988-89 season under the direction of the late Ron Mitchell.  The Lady Hornets downed Nicholls State 81-52 that season.

“This is most definitely going to be a good match-up for us,” Freeman-Jackson stated.  “I feel like we are prepared I welcome the challenge.  We have been playing better basketball, but we are going to most definitely have to play defense in order to get the win.  I am really looking forward to Nicholls coming to the Dunn-Oliver Acadome tomorrow.”

Alabama State will enter the contest 1-4 overall and are led by Nakiya Smith after five games averaging 12.0 per contest.  Jasmine Peeples leads the team in rebounds averaging 5.0 rebounds per game.

Nicholls State enters the game 6-2 and the team is being led by Alisha Allen averaging 14.3 points per game.  Jasmine Scott leads the team in rebounding averaging 6.3 rebounds per contest.
