ASU Women's Basketball Set to Face Alabama A&M at T.M. Elmore Gym

The Lady Hornets will take on intra-state rival Alabama A&M Saturday as the race continues to stay in the top five of the league.  Alabama State is currently in a five way tie with Alabama A&M, Jackson State, Grambling, and Alcorn.

“The bottom line is to win,” said Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Clayton Harris.  “We win this ball game and we are right back on top.  We still have a chance to win regular season play, but we are going to need a little help, the only thing that we can really do is control what we can do and that's to win out.  If we win out we still have a good chance to win our league.  We still have that goal in mind and it's still obtainable.”

The game represents a battle of schools that go way beyond just basketball.  Saturday's game is just not Alabama State vs. Alabama A&M it's a fight for rights in the SWAC.

The Lady Hornets are coming off a 68-57 road win against Arkansas Pine Bluff.  Three of Alabama State players scored in double figures, freshman Danielle Gazaway (20 pts, 6-6 FG) and sophomore Taila Arrington (14 pts) led the way, while senior Millicent Jones (10 pts, 4 rebounds) also chipped in with a strong performance.

“We played well against Arkansas Pine Bluff,” said Harris.  “In order to win against Alabama A&M we will have to continue the style of play that we did against UAPB.  We played defense and that was the determining factor of our win against them Monday night.  We have to come in tomorrow's game on top and focused.”

Tip between Alabama State (9-11, 6-5 SWAC) and Alabama A&M (11-10, 6-5 SWAC) is slated for 3:00 pm in the T.M. Elmore gym in what promises to be another key match-up for each team.
