Second Chance Baskets Deter Lady Hornets, In 63-51 loss to Bulldogs

Box Score The Alabama State University women's basketball team allowed Alabama A&M second chance baskets
in its loss in Normal, Ala. at the T.M. Elmore Gym.

“They're best player took it to us tonight, (Whiquitta Tobar) who had 27 points,” said Assistant Women's Coach Clayton Harris.  “We did a good job on her at times, but we let her get to the basket and when you allow a player to get to the free throw line several times its tough.  She is the best player in the league and she can go one-on-one, and she can shoot the three and we just didn't engage any defense on her.”

Alabama State had a slow start as they allowed the Bulldogs to jump out to an early 5-0 lead.  With 11:28 left the score was knotted 9-9.  Alabama A&M went on its second run of the night as the led by 16 points with 2:46 left on the clock.  The Lady Hornets tried to close the half as close as possible chipping a point here and there, but they just couldn't slow Alabama A&M down as they went into the half up 36-22.

“Alabama A&M got a lot of points off of the transition tonight,” said Harris.  “The difference in the game was Alabama A&M's efforts they played hard and we didn't.  Having experienced guards also contributed to their win.  We are starting freshman and Alabama A&M had juniors, and a senior leading their team.”

The Lady Hornets just couldn't transition the ball as they missed important cues that allowed Tobar to score basket after basket.  In the second half alone she was 7-for-8 from the free stripe line and 5-for-8 from the field.  She scored 18 points in the second half.  Alabama A&M's largest lead of the was 17 points with 13:36 left on the clock.  Alabama A&M continued to hold its lead closing out the game with a 12 point difference (63-51).

“We didn't have very balanced scoring tonight we just couldn't get it done,” said Harris.  “We have some better bigs and they weren't able outscore us in the paint, but they outscored us with jumpers and nobody was out guarding any the Alabama A&M players.”

Alabama State was led by three players, Freshmen Ashley Jones, Danielle Gazaway and sophomore Taila Arrington each scoring eight points apiece.   Jasmine Quinn added seven points to the score.

The Lady Hornets will look to regain its position as they take on Alcorn State, Saturday, February 18 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome in Montgomery, Ala.
