Alabama State Women's Basketball Look To Regain Its Winning Ways

Box Score The Alabama State women's basketball team is set to face the Lady Braves of Alcorn State during its annual pink zone contest now called Play 4 Kay.  Tip between the two schools is slated for 3 p.m. in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday.

The season is six games away from the opening day of the SWAC tournament, which is slated for March 7 in Garland, Texas.  Alabama State enters Saturday's contest with an improved record from last season of 9-12 overall and 6-6 in the league.  Alcorn State comes into the game with a 10-15 overall record and they have an 8-5 mark in the conference.

The contest will be broadcast live on Hornet Vision and will have live stat coverage as well.  The ASU Sports network has the call of the game.

The series between the two schools is at a disadvantage for the Lady Hornets as the Lady Braves holds a 45-13 overall record.  The last time these two teams met Alcorn State defeated Alabama State 56-49 in Lorman, Miss.

“In order to prepare for our upcoming match-up against Alcorn,” said Assistant Women's Basketball Coach Clayton Harris.  “We must have balanced scoring, the games that we have won we had more than Danielle Gazaway and Kierra Paige just scoring. Everyone on the team needs to be chipping in especially Millicent Jones, Quentori Alford and Erica Henderson everyone was scoring at least 10-12 points a game.  So we really worked on our offense.  We would be taking shots that weren't in our offense.  I think now we have ironed out everything and we should be fine against Alcorn.”

The Lady Hornets are coming off a 63-51 road loss at Alabama A&M in what started off as a close encounter throughout parts of the game.  Three of Alabama State players scored eight points apiece to lead the Lady Hornets, Taila Arrington, Ashley Jones and Danielle Gazaway.  Arrington pulled down a second best season high of six rebounds.  Gazaway chipped in five.

“After the loss to Alabama A&M we have had to go back to the basics,” said Harris.  “We have had to tweak some things to make sure that we are covering our entire basis and make sure we are not making some of the mistakes that we have been making in some of the ball games.  We really went back to fundamentals from the beginning of the year, so we have taken the girls back to make sure that we are doing the things that we are suppose to do in the game.”
