Jones Leads Lady Hornets Past Grambling

Box Score MONTGOMERY—Millicent Jones had 14 points and Danielle Gazaway chipped in with 13 to lead the Alabama State University Lady Hornets (13-13/10-7 SWAC) to a 55-48 win over Grambling State University (12-14/9-8 SWAC).

The win was important for ASU as they break a tie with Grambling and move into fourth place in the conference standings with just one game left before the conference tournament.  The win was also ASU's seventh win in their last 10 games.

“It is huge for us to get some momentum because the three teams that beat us at their place, we were able to beat them at our place,” head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said.  “It is big to know that you are capable of beating a team you may have to face in the first round of the tournament.”

ASU led the entire way, jumping out to 14-4 lead in the first half and building as much as a 12-point lead on two occasions.

ASU did not shoot the ball extremely well only hitting 35 percent of their shots, and they turned the ball over too many times with 21, but their defense was extremely stingy against the Lady Tigers holding them to only 28 percent shooting from the field.

Grambling was able to make a run late in the game when they cut an ASU 46-36 lead with 5:41 left in the game down to 46-40 with just 4:25 left.  The Lady Hornets did not flinch as Quentori Alford and Kierra Paige scored and pushed the lead back out to 10 points.

“Well those freshmen are growing up,” head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson said.  “We are jelling as a team enough to weather the storm and there are going to be some runs and we were able to withstand the run and even increase the lead.  When they made their run we were able to come back and make two or three baskets in a row which killed their run.”

Jones and Alford were big in tonight's game as Jones had her points, but Alford added a game-high 17 rebounds to go with her nine points.  Paige joined Alford with nine points, but she had a game-high five steals.

“We are getting a lot more productivity out of our bigs with Quentori Alford and now Millicent Jones and we are going to need that the rest of the season,” Freeman-Jackson stated.  “As we play Jackson State and then head into the tournament we are going to need inside play and it seems like they are jelling together and figuring out what needs to take place.”

I am pleased with their effort because we did some good things even though we were out of sync on the offensive end and we had a lot of turnovers but we figured out a way to get it done.”

Tonishea Mack led GSU with 12 points and she completed a double-double with 10 rebounds.  Savannah Carter scored 10 points.

The first half was not a thing of beauty for either team as the Lady Hornets went into the locker room with a 24-17 lead.  Grambling could only manage shooting 14.8 percent (4-27) from the field, but did hit nine of 16 free throws.  Ceazer led the way with five points.  GSU manage to score the final five points of the half to cut ASU's 24-12 lead down to seven.

The Lady Hornets managed to shoot 35 percent (8-23) from the floor, but 14 turnovers and several missed layups kept ASU from opening an even larger lead.

ASU will host Jackson State on Senior Day, Saturday, March 3 at 3 p.m. in the final regular season game of the season.
