Hornets Lose Final Game of Series at Gardner-Webb

Box Score
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Alabama State baseball team lost the final game of the four-game series at Gardner-Webb, falling 9-3 Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets (7-16) scored in the second inning. Darrion Pedro's one-out double to left field scored Jordan Mims, who led off with a single, to take a 1-0 lead.

Gardner-Webb (13-8) tied the score in the bottom of the second inning, then added two runs each in the third and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead.

Alabama State scored twice in the sixth, both runs coming with two out. Waldyvan Estrada reached on a two-out error, stole second, and scored on Pedro's double to deep center field. Pedro then scored on Emmanuel Marrero's single to right field to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Gardner-Webb extended its lead in the eighth, scoring four runs for the final margin.

“I think we have one piece figured out; we have the offensive side figured out,” head coach Mervyl Melendez said. “We were not very competitive on the mound today, and that's disappointing. We're not as deep on the mound as we need to be. We knew that coming in, but I want our guys to compete better to give it a little bit more effort. At the end of the day, we want to win ball games. I don't think enough effort was given for us to win today.”

Pedro went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Hornets, who host Georgia State Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
