Alabama State (16-19) is facing the Owls for the second time this season. KSU (19-14 heading into Tuesday's game at Georgia Southern) defeated the Hornets 14-2 on Feb. 22 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
At the time, it dropped Alabama State's record to 0-5 on the season. Since that time, the Hornets have rebounded, posting a 15-10 record since March 1, and have won nine of their past 12 games. However, the result of the earlier meeting this season is fresh in mind of head coach
Mervyl Melendez as he approaches this game with an eye toward this weekend's big home series against SWAC East Division leader Jackson State.
“One, as a competitor, you want to play better and get some revenge on the opponent when they've beaten you earlier in the season,” head coach
Mervyl Melendez said. “We're looking at it that way, and second, you also want to play well in preparation for this weekend. There are some parts of our game we've been working on that we want to execute tomorrow.”
Currently tied for second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference, the Owls are another quality opponent Alabama State has faced this season in non-conference action.
“I think that's what it's all about,” Melendez said “You have to play good opponents. You have to test yourself, and you want to have a chance to beat some good opponents as well. We have an opportunity Wednesday. We understand it's going to be a tough task. They are a very, very good team, and have very good pitching. They swung the bat extremely well against us the last time. We're going to have to do a lot of things well in order to win.”
