MONROE, La. – The Alabama State football team had its final practice before taking on the defending conference champion Grambling State Tigers Saturday night.
The Hornets (1-1 overall, 1-0 SWAC) and Tigers (0-2, 0-1) will kickoff at 6 p.m. from Robinson Stadium in Grambling, La. The game can be heard live on WVAS 90.7 FM and will be video streamed free of charge on SWAC TV. Football gameday central on bamastatesports.com will have live links to watch or listen to the game.
Alabama State arrived in northeast Louisiana Friday and had a late-afternoon walkthrough at nearby Wossman High School.
“Our focus was good,” head coach
Reggie Barlow said. “We talked before we left about the guys being focused but not tense and to enjoy the process while knowing what's at stake. For the time we are here, we have a big goal we're trying to achieve and we need everyone to be dialed in.”
That big goal is not only moving to 2-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play but beating the defending champs in their home opener. GSU dropped their SWAC opener to Alcorn State in Shreveport, La. and lost at TCU 56-0 last week.
“It's a big game,” Barlow said of the matchup of teams picked to win their respective divisions and play in the Toyota SWAC Championship Game December 8 in Birmingham. “It's the next game, it's a conference game and we don't get an opportunity to hit the rewind button. It's a big game for them also, playing their home opener. They'll be excited to play in front of their home fans, so we have to come out and play hard.”
