VICKSBURG, Miss. – The Alabama State football team had its final walkthrough Friday afternoon prior to Saturday's key Southwestern Athletic Conference game versus Alcorn State.
The Hornets (2-2 overall, 2-1 SWAC) and Braves (1-3, 1-1) will play at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jack Spinks Stadium in Lorman, Miss. The game will be broadcast live on WVAS 90.7 FM. Gameday Central on bamastatesports.com will have links to listen live, get live stats, and to Alabama State Athletics' social media platforms.
“Our guys had a good week of work,” head coach
Reggie Barlow said. “Thursday's practice was really good and today was just going through our callouts, making sure of things and getting focused. Everyone is dialed in and focused, but loose which is good. I think they are all excited about the opportunity to play.”
And while it is game five of the season and the third conference game, it is an important contest. Each team has one conference loss and with both teams in the Eastern Division, the winner will have the head-to-head tie-breaker which could be important later in the season.
“At some point, all SWAC games count in some form of fashion,” Barlow said. “It's really important to win the games on the East if we want to be the team to represent the division in the SWAC Championship. It's a must-win game. Hopefully our guys recognize the importance of it, and come out, play well and be dominant.”
An added wrinkle to Saturday's game is the fact its homecoming on the Alcorn State campus, which should add flavor to the atmosphere.
“It's a blessing and it's great to have the crowd and the pageantry surrounding the game,” Barlow said. “However, they have no effect on what happens on the field. If we go out and play, we can control how they react. We just have to focus on the task at hand, and that's the guys in the rectangle.”
