Box Score The Alabama State University soccer team fell to the Belmont Bruins 3-0 on Friday in its home opener at the new ASU Soccer Complex.
“I thought we played fairly well tonight, but we made some mistakes, some of the same mistakes that have cost us all year,” head coach
Jodie Smith stated. “We competed for ninety minutes and I'm pleased with that. I thought we had a couple of chances knocking in some goals, but we came up short with that.”
The Lady Hornets (1-5) played very aggressive, but couldn't hold off the attack of the Bruins forwards. Sophomore goalkeeper
Kylee Hathaway had six key saves in the first half for ASU. Alabama State ended the half getting outshot by Belmont 11-4.
The Bruins (3-2) opened the game scoring the first goal of the match in the third minute off the foot of Katie Proud. Laura Harris added the second goal for the Bruins in the eighth minute of the match, assisted by Lauren Paynter. Rachel Schmidt knocked in the final goal of the match off an assist from Spencer Laufur, capping the score at 3-0.
Hathaway finished the game with eleven saves on the day. The Bruins outshot the Lady Hornets 18-8 for the match.
“The ladies were very excited to be playing on their own field in front of their own fans, so I'm happy about that,” said Coach Smith. “We're going to face a pretty good Lipscomb team come next Friday, so we got to defend and play our hardest for ninety minutes.”
The Lady Hornets will return to action when they host Lipscomb on Friday, September 14 at 1 p.m.
