Hornets, Stillman Set for 90th Turkey Day Classic

Head Coach Reggie Barlow visits with the team after today's walk through
The 90th Turkey Day Classic is less than 24 hours away as the Hornets will host Stillman College. The two schools have only met twice on the gridiron and this will be the first time they have played since 1923. The Hornets hold a 2-0 lead in the series winning the first meeting in 1922 with a 38-0 shutout and winning the final game 90 years ago 30-0.

Stillman will bring a 6-4 overall record into Montgomery, and they finished their conference season with a 4-3 record. The Tigers are averaging over 28 points per game and play a two quarterback system, in which both quarterbacks are good at moving the ball down the field.

Torrance Moise is completing 58 percent of his passes for 1,308 yards and seven touchdowns. He is also Stillman's leading rusher with 403 yards. He averaged 4.7 yards per carry and has rushed for five scores.

Josh Straughan is the second quarterback. He is not the runner Moise is, but he has thrown for 1,334 yards while completing over 62 percent of his passes. He has thrown for 10 scores. Combined, the two quarterbacks have thrown for over 2,600 yards and 17 touchdowns while only throwing five interceptions.

As a team Stillman has rushed for 1,323 yards and 21 touchdowns. They average over four yards per carry. Along with Moise, Rovonta Johnson has rushed for 322 yards and five touchdowns and Jovantae Thrumon has rushed for 297 and a couple of scores.

"We have to line up and just play our ball against them," Head Coach Reggie Barlow said. "It's about adjustments and as the game goes along and we watch them we will have to make adjustments against what they are doing."

ASU's (7-4, 7-2 SWAC) offense was off in their last game against Mississippi Valley only scoring 19 points in the win, so they will be looking to get back on track against Stillman's defense which has a couple of shutouts to its credit this season.

Isaiah Crowell continues to lead ASU in rushing with 1,089 yards and 15 touchdowns. Malcolm Cyrus has been banged up for several weeks, but still has rushed for 759 yards and six scores.

Daniel Duhart is trying to get back in rhythm after only completing 16 passes for 128 yards against Mississippi Valley. He has completed over 54 percent of his passes for 1,717 yards and 16 touchdowns against only six interceptions.

ASU has seven receivers with over 100 yards in pass receptions, led by Earl Lucas' 48 receptions for 518 yards and three scores. DeMario Bell is leading the team averaging over 19 yards on his 26 receptions which has accounted for 493 yards and another three scores.

Jamel Johnson has caught 24 passes for 294 yards and a team-high four scores. His 68 yard touchdown reception against Kentucky is the longest reception of the season. In all, ASU quarterbacks have completed passes to 18 different receivers.

The game is scheduled to be broadcast live at 3 p.m. on ESPNU. The game can also be heard on WVAS FM 90.7 beginning with the pregame show at 2:45 p.m.
