MONTGOMERY- The Alabama State University women's basketball team fell to the Troy Trojans 77-67 in their home opener at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
"We struggled from the jump, we were not alert as we should have been," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. "We didn't start the second half off like we should have, Troy put pressure on us as they ran up and down the court."
"Quentori eventually got settled into the game having a double-double for the night as the go to player, I thought she had a pretty decent night," said Freeman-Jackson
Alabama State only trailed by two points, at halftime, closing the half on a 6-0 run capped by a Taila Arrington buzzer beating jumpshot. The Troy Trojans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and saw the Hornets quickly tie the score at the 19 minute mark. After the two teams traded baskets the Trojans went on a 6-0 run. The Hornets began to claw back into the half by tying the score on two different occasions and eventually taking the lead 25-24 at the 7 minute mark. The Lady Trojans then responded by outscoring the Hornets 19-13 in the next five minutes. The first half closed on a high note for the Hornets as they went on a 6-0 run of their own cutting the Trojan lead down to two 42-40.
The Hornets shot 51.6% from the field but, had twice as many turnovers as the Trojans with 24. Jamesha Blake led the way with 10 off the bench points and five rebounds heading into the first half.
In the second half ASU went cold shooting only 23 percent (9-39) from the field and went 0-15 from behind the arc. Overall they shot 35% from the field.
"I thought our girls did a few good things tonight but, overall we have work to do," Freeman-Jackson said. We will go back and focus more on rebounding because it is something we have had trouble with from our previous exhibition and scrimmage games.
The Lady Hornets will return to action as they host Stillman College on Nov.12th in the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The game is set for tip-off at 6 p.m.
