The Alabama State University women's basketball team fell to the Southern Jaguars this afternoon at the F.G. Activity Center in Baton Rouge.
“We didn't play well today,” said Head Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson. “We started off with an early lead then digging ourselves in a whole that we just couldn't get out of. Southern played with some big guards that caused us a lot of problems. We really didn't play smart basketball today.”
The Lady Hornets were led by senior
Erica Henderson with 13 points.
Kierra Paige had 10 points and
Taila Arrington led the charge on the boards with 13.
Henderson shot a quick three to start the first half at the 18:12 mark, soon after Jasmine Jefferson made a lay-up to place the Jags on the board. Southern then advanced over the Lady Hornets by two points soon to go on 10-0 run (13-3) with 11:02 left in the game. The Jags took their 12 point lead into the half up 28-16 to close the first half.
With the loss the Lady Hornets move to an 8-16 overall record and 6-7 in the SWAC. The Jaguars improve to 12-13 overall and 11-3 in the league.
The second half saw a different set of Lady Hornet's players coming out of the locker room taking a defensive stance chipping away a Jags lead to at least eight points. It just wasn't enough to give the Hornets the win falling to Southern 55-44.
“We didn't do a good job of running our offense,” Jackson-Freeman stated. “We are now going to have to move on from this game and focus on the next one at hand and that's Alcorn.”
Next up for the Lady Hornets will face the Lady Braves of Alcorn State University in Lorman, Miss. at the Whitley HPER Gym at 5:30 p.m.
