Taila Arrington scored a career and game high 19 points to lead Alabama State to a 73-66 victory over in-state rival Alabama A&M on Saturday evening at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

“If you noticed towards the end of the game, I ended up using all my timeouts, because I wanted to make sure that the younger ladies understood what we needed them to do, from the defensive to the offensive end,” Head Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson said. “I thought this was a great for us. It's been a while since we've beaten them twice in one year, so I thought this was a great win for us. We just have to continue pushing on and play great basketball throughout.”

“There have been times this year, especially in the SWAC where we've played three guards at a time, and they've led the way for us most of the time,” said Freeman-Jackson. “I thought those guards play great together.”

The Lady Hornets (8-15 overall, 6-6 SWAC) last defeated the Lady Bulldogs twice in the 2005-06 season. Arrington, Gazaway, and Paige scored 17 of ASU's last 19 points to lead Alabama State down the stretch.

Henderson and Gazaway were the other two Lady Hornets in double-figures with 14 points each.
Quentori Alford had nine to lead all rebounders.

“We put a lot of emphasis on playing great defense without fouling,” said Freeman-Jackson. “We fouled too much tonight, so we really have to work on it. They are playing hard, but they have to play smarter. I thought Taila and
Danielle Gazaway did a great job on Shundray (Davis). I thought our guards played well today. We are pretty deep at the guard position, so we were rotating them in and out wearing them down.”

Alabama State jumped out to an early 7-2 lead before the first media break and never looked back. The Lady Hornets shot 21-of-43 from the field (48%) and shot 6-of-11 from behind the arch (54.5%) for the game. ASU out-rebounded the Lady Bulldogs 42-34.

I thought this was a great win for us, being that we're about to go into Southern next weekend, said Freeman-Jackson. “Hopefully, this win will give the ladies the momentum they need to go down there and win.”

The Lady Hornets will travel to Baton Rouge on Saturday, February 16 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
