Lady Hornets Basketball Rolls Into Dallas for 2013 Toyota SWAC Tourney

The Alabama State women's basketball staff and team arrived in Dallas, Texas early Monday morning in preparation for the 2013 Toyota SWAC Tournament to begin on Tuesday, March 12.  The Lady Hornets will tip-off against the Grambling State Tigers at 8 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas.

The week-long event will showcase all 10 of the women's SWAC basketball teams each having the same agenda of reaching the goal of being crowned the 2013 SWAC Champions.  The Lady Hornets has appeared in some faucet of the tournament for the 13 years only to achieve the goal once since the Freda Freeman era during the 2002-03 season.

Alabama State will face this year's ninth spot team Grambling State for the third time this season after falling to the Tigers last Saturday 68-64 in Grambling, La.  This will mark the 5th time that these times have had to play against each other in tournament play.  This will be the first to actually have to bid to play against the number one seed in the conference.  In total the Lady Hornets have faced the Lady Tigers 45 times overall, Grambling leads the series 30-15.

Fans can view all the action on swac.org and receive play-by-play updates via live stats.

All-SWAC second team Quentori Alford takes the charge of owning the boards as well as in the scoring department.  She averages 9.8 rebounds per game and 8.8 in scoring.

“I have faith in the team,” Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson, said.  “I think that we have some playmakers in “Q” (Quentori) and Kiya (Nakiya) we just have to get everybody on the team to be balanced and focused.  We shouldn't always depend on a few people and I know that I have a whole team that can contribute.”

“After traveling all night the girls are were a little tired, so we will have an early practice and allow them to get some rest the remainder of the day.    We were able to get some things accomplished at practice, but I just need us to execute and get a win.  We didn't do as well as I would have liked to this season, but I am continuing to make the necessary changes to get the team back where we need to be or should be.”

“Although we have played this team twice already and we split with them each time I still feel like if we can come out and have a balanced attack and play Alabama State women's basketball we can go far and be successful.”
