Box Score Alabama State University fell, 80-56 to the Grambling State Lady Tigers during the 2013 Toyota SWAC postseason play tonight in Garland, Texas at the Curtis Culwell Center.
The Lady Hornets went 7-22 from the free throw line only shooting 31 percent the worse they have shot all season. On the other hand the Lady Tigers went 64 percent from the free strip line going 14-22.
The first half of play the Lady Hornets played their best half. ASU went on a 5-0 run to begin the game only to see Grambling chip at their first and only lead of the half. With 15:54 left in the half the teams saw their first tie knotting the game at 11 all.
The Lady Tigers went on to take the lead, ASU not allowing them to advance to far tying the half for a third time (18-18) at the 11:39 mark. Grambling then went on a 6-0 run until the Lady Hornets knocked the six point deficit to knot the half for the final time 35-35 before going into the intermission.
“We didn't play a complete ball game,” said head coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson. “This is about the size of how our season has gone all year and that's not finishing ball games. We were tied 35-35 and went 3-11 from the free throw line that causes a problem right there.
Nakiya Smith one of our better free throw shooters missed all three of her free throws in the first half. You have to have guts to step up and make free throws and none of our girls played with courage tonight.”
The second half of play saw the Lady Tigers get out front quickly taking an eight point lead. ASU took a while to warm up before
Taila Arrington made the team's first bucket at the 16:16 mark. ASU was able to take their first lead since the first half at the 13:56 mark (48-47).
Alabama State then went cold not making another basket until the 5:50 mark after the Lady Tigers went on an 11-0 run. The Lady Hornets pulled out a couple of more buckets by
Ashley Jones who had 11 points in the loss before the Lady Tigers closed out the game with a 80-56 victory.
“The second half we just didn't do a good job of executing our offense,” Freeman-Jackson said. “We went on a shooting drought and we didn't stop Miller (JoAnna of Grambling State) she gave us a bit of problems. We tried to press, but once they got out of the press they got the numbers."
There were three Lady Hornets in double figures tonight. Arrington led the team with 13 points both Jones and Alfrod had 11 a piece. Jones took the charge on the boards pulling down eight of the 43 rebounds for Alabama State.
“This was a very disappointing loss the young ladies just didn't do what they needed to do in order to have a successful season. We went on a scoring drought and it's really hard to get back into the game especially against a team like Grambling.”
“Heading into next season, we are going to have to find girls that have heart and that can handle the stress. We are going to turn this ball club around, because this is not an example of ASU basketball.”
