Lady Hornets Go 3-1 In Istap Collegiate Cup

The Alabama State volleyball team split a pair of Saturday matches in the final day of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Tournament at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
 
The Lady Hornets lost their first match of the day to Jacksonville State 3-0 (16-25, 19-25, 19-25), before winning the final game of the tournament with 3-0 win over Savannah State (25-13, 25-11, 25-22). Alabama State finished 3-1 this weekend to move its overall record to 5-7.
 
"I'm really pleased with my team's performance," head volleyball coach Penny Lucas-White said. "I think they came out and fought. We played a really good match against Jacksonville State, things we can go away with and learn from that will prepare us for the season ahead. I learned that my team is more resilient than I ever thought. I'm really pleased with where we are headed."
 
Alabama State returns to action Tuesday at Troy at 7 p.m.
 
In other matches Saturday, Jacksonville State finished the weekend 4-0 as it defeated the University of New Orleans 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-11), Arkansas-Pine Bluff defeated Savannah State 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-23), and New Orleans defeated UAPB 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-19).
 
(UPDATED ALL TOURNAMENT LIST) - Alabama State's Amber Bennett and Tiara Kelly made the all-tournament team, along with Jacksonville State's Abbey Heredia,  Nicole Merget, Trisha Mockapeteris, New Orleans' Marti Richmiller, Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Ayanna Parker and Jordan Foyer, and Savannah State's Caitlynn Mason.
 
Jacksonville State 3, LADY HORNETS 0: The Lady Gamecocks followed a similar pattern in the first two games, pulling away from 9-9 and 10-10 ties, respectively.
 
In game three, the score was tied five times, the last time at 17-17. From there, JSU scored eight of the last 10 points to win the match.
 
Bennett led Alabama State with eight kills, while Myla Marshall added seven. Brooke Beasley had 12 assists and Ellyn Jones 10 for ASU.
 
Emily Rutherford had 15 kills and Heredia 34 assists for Jacksonville State.
 
LADY HORNETS 3, Savannah State 0: Alabama State closed the tournament with a three-game sweep. The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back. ASU broke open a close game midway through the second game to win going away.
 
Savannah State was determined to avoid the sweep, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Alabama State rallied with eight of the next nine points to take a 12-11 lead. The match stayed nip and tuck from that point, with one final tie at 19-19. However, Alabama State never trailed again and put away the Lady Tigers to complete the win.
 
Marshall had nine kills and Bennett added eight, while Jones had 12 assists.
 
Justice Dilworth had seven kills and Masoe 15 assists for Savannah State.
 
Jacksonville State 3, New Orleans 0: Jacksonville State won handily over UNO in the first match of the day.
 
Emily Rutherford had 13 kills and Nicole Merget 10 for JSU. Cara Sander had eight kills for New Orleans.
 
UAPB 3, Savannah State 0: Arkansas-Pine Bluff posted an impressive win over Savannah State.
 
Parker had 11 kills, and Ashlie Jones added 10, while Foyer had 28 assists for UAPB. Justice Dilworth had nine kills for SSU.
 
New Orleans 3, UAPB 0: UNO held off a determined Arkansas-Pine Bluff squad.
 
Taylor Berry had 11 kills and Cara Sander eight for the Lady Privateers. Audrey Sherles had 11 kills for UAPB.
