Alabama State's two-point loss to Jacksonville State turned out to be close on the field and after having two days to review the film, it turned out to be that close on film as well.
"All in all there were some positive things to take away from there (the game)," Head Coach
Reggie Barlow said. "I thought we looked good. I know it was our first game and we had some new guys playing for the first time, but those are not excuses, because Jacksonville State played hard and did a good job as well. That is a good team and they were predicted fourth in their conference (OVC) and that is probably because they have a new coach, but they are a solid team and played us well."
The Hornets defense was playing their first game under new defensive coordinator
Kevin Ramsey and there were a lot of positives on that side of the ball. They held the high-powered Jacksonville State offense to 366 yards, 40 yards less than what ASU had. The Hornets defense also forced two turnovers, which they turned into two scores.
Ramsey's defenses are known to be an attacking and pressing style of defense and that was the way it turned out Saturday night. ASU's defense had two sacks and 11 tackles behind the line of scrimmage which resulted in a negative 50 yards.
"Defensively our guys really flew around and got to the ball for really three quarters," Barlow said. "The third quarter we played in a frenzy, but not getting lined up correctly hurt us and those are things we can correct."
ASU has changed their practice times on Wednesday's moving the start time up to a 2:30 p.m. start instead of at 3 p.m. The earlier start accommodates several of the players who have 4 p.m. classes on Wednesday.
