ASU Volleyball Excited to get Back on the Court

The Alabama State University volleyball team will begin their second week of competition at the Aggie/Spartan Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7. The tournament is duall-hosted by North Carolina-Greensboro and North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.

ASU will open the tournament against one of the host North Carolina A&T. The two teams will play Friday at 7 p.m. ASU will play the other two teams in the tournament on Saturday. Murray State will be the first opponent on Saturday with an 11 a.m. start. The Lady Hornets final match of the Invite will be against UNC-Greensboro at 7 p.m.

"We are excited about getting back on the court and building off what we were able to do during our first tournament," Head Coach Penny Lucas-White said. "We did a lot of good things against some great competition last weekend in Florida and I know that is going to do nothing but help us as we get into play this weekend."

The Lady Hornets (1-3) will be led this weekend by sophomore Amber Bennett and junior Brooke Beasley. Both players had standout performances last weekend. Bennett led ASU with 22 kills during the weekend of play and also had six total blocks.

Beasley, the reigning Southwestern Athletic Conference Setter of the Week, led the Hornets with 62 assists over the four game invite. She also showed she is more than a setter as she also had 13 kills, 21 digs, nine total blocks and for good measure, added three service aces.

The tournament in Greensboro is not the only weekend games ASU will be involved in. On Sunday they will travel over to Durham, N.C., to face North Carolina Central. That game is scheduled for noon.
