Free Throws Hurt Lady Hornets Basketball in Loss to Southern

Box Score Alabama State women's basketball dropped a tough game on the road to Southern on Monday night, 60-44.  Freshman Brittney Wright led the Lady Hornets with nine points and also pulled down 10 boards.  Danielle Gazaway also had nine points and six rebounds she also had one steal.

"We knew that this was going to be a tough match-up when we came in tonight," said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson.  "I feel that both teams played a slow first half, but Southern was able to go on a run and we could not make a defensive stop.  Now in the second half we were able to stop them from running the score up on us holding them to 21 second half points.  The key to this was making free throws and that's something we didn't do well at all."

Southern (11-5, 8-0 SWAC) had two players in double figures Adrian Sanders led all scorers with 12 points, while Kendra  Coleman added 10 points in the victory.  The Lady Hornets struggled with ball control, committing 14 turnovers on the night, but also forced 15 by the Jaguars.

The Jaguars ended the first half with a 20 point lead over the Lady Hornets (39-19).  The Lady Hornets were only able to shoot 22.7 percent in the first half and turned the ball over 12 times, while forcing only ten.  Brittney Smith had six first-half points, while six Lady Hornets had two apiece and three Alabama State (9-9, 2-5 SWAC) players had four boards.

Coming out of the break, the Jaguars opened up with a 7-0 run to take a 27 point lead the largest deficit of the game for the Lady Hornets.  Alabama State tried to rally back having chances at the charity stripe line to cut the lead (8-21), only able to cut the Jaguars lead to 16 before ending the contest.

"We had opportunities to come back," Jackson-Freeman said.  "We took the missed opportunities lightly.  We missed thirteen free throws in the second half that could have put us closer than just 16 points.  We also had balls that just didn't drop for us.  It seemed like they just went in and came right back out.  I do want to say that we did play hard and tough and that's how we need to continue to play down the line."

The Lady Hornets will return to the court Saturday as they play host to Prairie View A&M, February 1st at 3 p.m. at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome in Montgomery.
